In 2021, remote online notarization (RON) has seen significant progress, with more than six states enacting permanent RON legislation. In July, Illinois joined this list of states that have adopted permanent RON legislation.

On July 23, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed SB 2664, authorizing RON in Illinois once the Illinois Secretary of State issues regulations. With the enactment of SB 2664, Illinois became the 37th state to adopt RON. However, it's noted that remote ink notarization (RIN) was included in the law, which raised concerns about security. Notarize emphasizes the importance of multi-factor authentication in RON to ensure a compliant, safe, and secure transaction.

Notarize expresses its commitment to providing a platform that prioritizes safety and security in notarization processes. While encouraged by the progress made in 2021, Notarize looks forward to continuing its work as a partner and resource to governments to expand RON across the country.
