There are only a few days left in 2021, which means there’s no better time to pause and reflect on the year that’s been.
The Notarize team had a remarkable 12 months, featuring a fresh round of funding, several humbling recognitions, and some much-needed chillaxing. It has truly been a transformative year on so many levels.
We’ll share some incredible year-over-year business metrics in early 2022. In the meantime, here are the numbers that defined us as a company in 2021.

91: Unique press mentions
10+: Awards and recognitions
9: New markets for our “Bring Your Own Notary” solution
9: New states to adopt online notarization in 2021 (Wyoming, West Virginia, New Mexico, Kansas, Arkansas, Oregon, New Jersey, Illinois, and New Hampshire)
7: Partnership integrations launched, including Adobe, Docutech, and SimpleNexus.
2021 was certainly a year to remember, led by our inclusion on Forbes’ “25 Next Billion-Dollar Startups” and our $130 million Series D round of funding that included Canapi Ventures, Wells Fargo, Citi Investments, and Capital G, Alphabet’s independent growth fund.
We’re also incredibly proud of nearly a dozen company and individual recognitions, which include:
- CBInsights Fintech 250: The Top Fintech Companies of 2021
- Ernst & Young New England 'Entrepreneur of the Year' (Pat Kinsel, CEO)
- Forbes 25 Next Billion-Dollar Start-ups
- HousingWire 2021 Vanguard Award Winner (Pat Kinsel, CEO)

- National Mortgage Professional '40 Under 40', 2021 (Pat Kinsel, CEO)
This was also another remarkable year for our public affairs team, which worked closely with state legislatures to pass online notarization legislation in nine new states. These nine new state laws mean that an additional half a million notaries have access to online notarization solutions that will bring their business into the 21st century.

Our mission drives us, but it's our people that define us. We grew as a company by almost 150% in 2021, bringing diverse talent from across the country with the goal of building solutions and experiences that industries can rely on.
In the first half of the year alone, we added:
- Larry D’Angelo as President and Chief Commercial Officer (formerly member of the Notarize Board of Directors and Chief Sales Officer at LogMeIn);
- Roger Ferguson as a member of our Board of Directors (formerly President and CEO of TIAA);
- Terri Davis as General Manager of Real Estate (formerly of Ellie Mae, PMI, and Fannie Mae); and
- Matt Cameron as Head of Financial Services Policy (formerly Assistant Director in the Office of Stakeholder Management at the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau).
We later added Lisa Kalscheur as Chief Marketing Officer (formerly CMO of Kibo) and bolstered our public affairs team with industry veterans Kim Gaedeke (AVP, Head of Government Affairs), and Casey Garber (Director of Auto Policy & Industry Relations).
In total, we added 293 new team members in 2021 who are committed to building a world-class product and experience.
Collaboration
6.5 million: Minutes on conference calls
4.1 million: Slack messages
172,290: Conference calls
517: Public Slack channels
As a remote-first company, communication means everything to the Notarize team. Slack is both our most direct means of communication and one of the ways we work to develop company culture.
Notarize employees averaged 11,400 Slack messages in 2021 – contributing to 517 public Slack channels that range from business operations to more communal forums dedicated to sports, cooking, trivia, gardening, and pets.
Our conference call numbers were even more incredible. Notarize employees averaged 479 meetings per team member over the course of the year. If you add up all the hours we spent face-to-face with one another, you’d have 4,423 days of back-to-back calls, or just over 12 years.
Support
8,760: Hours of service on the Notarize platform
400: New articles added to our support knowledge base
We’re incredibly proud of the support we provide, especially because most signers come to the Notarize platform with unique needs. Addressing these needs and signer concerns puts our support team on the frontlines of customer experience – and often aids in the success of mission-critical transactions.
Our support team handled more than 8,760 hours of service in 2021. We also doubled our knowledge base in 2021, building articles that provide guidance and boost the comfort and confidence of users on the platform.
